Robert Plant and Elizabeth Cook top nominations for AMA awards

May 23, 2011 Comments: 0
Robert Plant

The British are invading Americana: Robert Plant and his Band of Joy are joint top of the nominations in the Americana Music Association awards announced today, while much-lauded Mumford and Sons are up for both best emerging artist and for best group.

Plant and the band – which includes Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and Darrell Scott – are nominated for artist, group and album of the year. Miller is also nominated on his own in the artist of the year category, and as instrumentalist of the year – an award he has won three times in the past including last year.

The other artist with three nominations is Elizabeth Cook, who is up for artist of the year, album of the year (Welder), and song of the year (El Camino). The other nominee in the artist of the year category is last year’s emerging artist winner Hayes Carll, who also has a nomination for song of the year.

Mumford and Sons are a band that seem to defy categorisation – as shown by the fact that less than 24 hours earlier they won at the Billboard Music Awards for top rock album, top alternative artists and top alternative album, and they have also scooped folk plaudits.

The Avett Brothers are nominated again in the duo or group category, which they won last year and in 2007, but they will face strong competition from Mumford and Sons, the Band of Joy and rising duo The Civil Wars, who recently opened for singer Adele’s North American tour and who are also nominated in the new or emerging artist category.

There were also two nominations for Justin Townes Earle, for album and song of the year, while Sarah Jarosz got a nomination in the instrumentalist of the year category on her 20th birthday.

The nominations were announced in New York City and the awards will be handed out at the association's annual conference in Nashville in October.
